What Nutrients Provide the Body with Energy?

When it comes to providing energy for our body, carbohydrates are the number one source. They are one of the six essential nutrients and the primary source of energy. Examples of carbohydrates include sugars, starch, and dietary fiber. The body's top priority is to provide enough energy for all the cellular activities necessary for life.

Carbohydrates are the preferred energy source, but if the diet does not provide enough carbohydrates, proteins will be used as an alternative. Calories are obtained from food and provide energy to the body. Out of all the essential nutrients, only three provide calories. These macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) are needed in large quantities for the body to function properly.
