An example of a low-nutritious food is hard candy, which contains no more nutrients than some simple carbohydrates from sugar. Nutritious foods are foods that are especially dense in one or more necessary nutrients, such as eggs, fish, liver, avocado, green vegetables, beans and legumes. Nutrition helps to receive and use the materials necessary for the maintenance of its function and for the growth and renewal of its components.

Chemotrophic nutrition is also part of this mode of nutrition, in which the body synthesizes organic foods by chemical reaction. This type of nutrition is exhibited by amoeba, which absorbs complex substances and converts them into simpler substances.
